The Chalice The crystal chalice is an artifact that has been in the village since it was founded, and is the most valuable possession a crystal caravan has: it is what keeps the miasma at bay, and holds the myrr. Crafted using techniques only available to the most talented artificers, the chalice is heavily enchanted to make it nearly indestructible. It is resistant to all forms of magic, physical attacks, and even dragons cannot manage to destroy them with their gouts of flame (Gwesus and Squenix have an interesting story regarding that, actually...). The chalice emits an aura around it, about 50 meters in radius, that holds off Miasma. Many more intelligent monsters know the value of the chalice, which is why it also is guarded against monsters via protection spells, most importantly of which is a permanent illusion over it that renders it invisible to monsters. While valuable and potent, it is also heavy. Any character carrying the chalice has their hands occupied and are treated as if they're heavily encumbered. Heavy encumbrance causes a reduction in speed, dexterity, and skills that rely on mobility. While carrying a chalice, the character holding it cannot make attacks, cast spells, or perform other complex actions. Moogles are a special exception to the encumbrance: When carrying the chalice, they cannot cast or attack, but their hands are free to do other things. Also, they are not encumbered or flat-footed when carrying the chalice. The one problem is their mouth *is* holding the chalice, so it is nearly imposable for a moogle to speak coherently while carrying the chalice. The crystal of the chalice can only be one basic element at a time. This element is required to traverse the various miasma streams that cross the globe. A crystal can only cross the stream if the crystal is the same element as that stream. If the crystal is not the same element, then the stream repels the crystal: As moogles do not need crystals to survive, they need not worry about these effects. Changing the element of the crystal is easy: across the world there are 'hot spots' to change the element of these crystals. When used, the hot spot changes the element of the crystal to whatever the hot spot's element is.
