Languages - Unless otherwise mentioned, a language has its own alphabet. Even if a language shares an alphabet with another, it is still impossable to read normally unless you know the language. Decipher Script can be used to assist if you understand the alphabet, but not the language. - Each Race starts with their own language (Clavat, Yuke, Lilty, Selkie, and Moogle) as well as Common. Bonus languages include, but are not limited to: Draconic, Goblin, Orc, Gnoll, Sylvan, Abyssal (Undead), Undercommon, Giant, (Ancient) Selkic, (Ancient) Rebina, Selkic (Sign), Yuke (Sign), Avianic, Lamian, Pug (Sign), Aquan, Ignian, and Celestial. Any of the basic languages known by the races are also available to the other races as bonus languages. Common - The language spoken by all the basic tribes, Common finds its roots in the ancient language of Rebena Te Ra. Mixed with the influences of a huge number of sources, Common sounds and is spelled exactly like modern-day english, as spoken in America. Clavat - Closely related to Common, Clavat tongue shares many similarities with Common. The phrasing is very similar, although the spoken words tend to place as much importance on tone as actual pronounciation. Think of a strange mix between German and Chinese. Lilty - The language spoken by the Lilties, Lilty is a straightforward tongue. It is harsh-sounding, and will commonly sound insulting even if you're congradulating someone on a job well done. Think a shorthand version of German for speaking. Selkie - Spoken by the Selkies from the sea, Selkie have a fluent language, filled with many subtelties and nuances. Selkie will commonly slip small tricks into their wordplay while speaking in this language. Selkie is much like one of the Romance languages: think a mix between Italian, French, and Spanish. Yuke - A strange language 'spoken' by the Yukes, Yuke is as much about not talking as it is about talking. It is a slow tongue, so single words can convey great meanings. It's rumored that it has its origins in some of the monster languages, such as Abyssal, but these rumors have so far been coincidental at best. Moogle - Moogles speak a strange tongue composed completly of 'kupos' and body movements, particularly with that of their pompom. It is possible to speak without it, but the meaning can be muddled in polite conversation. Moogle is rather happy and cute sounding, and lends itself to poetry and dance *very* well. Some find speaking moogle demeaning due to its almost childlike nature. Draconic - The language spoken by the dragons. It is a very hard to pronounce tongue, and places very much importance on the strength of speach. Many ancient writings are in this language, as dragons were, and still are, some of the most powerful and oldest creatures ever. Oddly (or maybe not so), Draconic automatically assumes the speaker is speaking posessively - stating nobody owns or controls something is harder than saying you do. Most reptilian humanoids speak draconic as well. Goblin - Spoken by goblins, this language is rather submissive and sounds whiney when not understood. There is no emphasis system in the language, and so everything sounds of equal importance. Goblin shares its alphabet with Common. Orc - The language of orcs, Orc is a bastardized mix of Clavat and Lilty. It is impossable to be complementing in the tongue without being creative with words, in which case most orcs would bash your brains in for talking down to them. Orc uses the Lilty alphabet. Gnoll - A language based on barks and howls, gnoll will sound much like a dog's speach unless heard by someone who understands the language. Or someone who's just plain suspicious. Gnollish refers to one person as leader. This 'leader' uses a slight variation as the others for his or her speach, signifying its importance. The others use the standard, more submissive, tongue. If you understand one, you understand the other. Gnoll uses the Draconic alphabet. Sylvan - Spoken by woodland creatures, this language is a favorite among those who enjoy nature and its splendors. It is a very very fluid language, and will usually sound complimenting even if the speaker is shouting at you to go to the seven gates of hell and incarcerate your corpse with a spoon. It, like Selkie, is somewhat deceptive. Sylvan uses the Moogle alphabet. Abyssal - The language of the dead is a very quiet and, usually, unspoken language. Numerous powerful and necromantic texts are written in this language, and thus this dark tongue is a common among the more ambiguous spellcasters. On occassion, non-evil undead can be found and conversed with using this tongue, which sounds very whispy and errie, as the syllables are supposed to all meld together. Usually these undead have a *lot* to share, but will require a service that, they hope, will send them to their final resting place. Abyssal uses the Yuke alphabet. Undercommon - This language is spoken by subterranean creatures, demons, and devils. Undercommon relies on repetetion for importance, but in most other ways sounds identical to Common. Undercommon uses the Common alphabet. Giant - Spoken by, well, giants, this language is also used by a number of other magical creatures. Giants have since been pretty much lost to antiquity, but their books can still be found in some areas, including the library of Mochet Mannor, and oddly enough many many cheffs are required to learn it, for a number of cookbooks are written in it. Selkic (Ancient) - The ancient language of the Selkie is known to date back long before AI. Found mostly on tablets in Conall Curach, a few practicioners of this language still exist to this day. It sounds much like Selkic, but is about as comprehensable as Greek is to a normal American. This language shares the Selkie alphabet. Rebanese (Ancient) - Long lost to antiquity, Rebena Te Ra is a powerful location invoking feelings of a golden age long passed. Rebanese is similarly a strong language, proud and almost regal sounding. Much of the language sounds like that of the ancient Romans, with strong Arabic influences. Rebanese uses a symbolic alphabet. Selkic (Sign) - Selkic sign language is identical to the kind used centuries ago. It is said Selkies who know you have it will give you better prices, but so far this hasn't been shown to be true. Selkic sign is commonly used as a Thieve's Cant to relay information without anyone else noticing. All other ways, it is identical to Selkic or Selkie. You must know Selkic or Selkie to know Selkic (Sign). Yuke (Sign) - See Yuke, only without the talking. You must know Yuke to know Yuke (Sign). Avianic - The language of the skies and the birds, many many intellegent arial creatures speak Avianic. Composed of whistles and chirps, Avianic is also a favorite among Yukes for its ability to convey so much information in a simple melody. Avianic's script is that much like a modern-day music cleff, and although those musically inclined may be able to reproduce the sounds easily, discerning the music requires knowledge of the language. Lamian - Sometimes called Parseltongue due to an influce of Potter fandom, Lamian is the language spoken by the snake-like Lamias. Not much else speaks it, but Lamias are known to be willing to negotiate over fighting, if you satisfy their conditions. Medusa also speak Lamian, and are considerably less likely to negotiate. The language is mostly comprised of a variety of hisses, and can sometimes be considered rude in polite company due to its dubious nature. The lamian alphabet is similar to the Selkic, but utilizes a much greater deal of calligraphy and artistic talent to write properly. Pug (Sign) - Pugs, Tonberries, and the like, do communicate with eachother. Their language is composed of a variety of stabbing motions, lamp movements, and the single word 'Doink'. It is possible to speak entirely with the motions, but the 'Doink' is there much like a clarifier or seperator between ideas. Pug is written with a very very harsh variation on the Yuke alphabet. Aquan - The creatures of the seas and water use this language. Aquan is fluid and everchanging, even against the will of the speaker it can sometimes have a flow of its own. Aquan, unlike the other more fluid languages, is very straight to the point. There are no subtelties or nuances about it. Aquan uses the Selkie alphabet. Ignian - A tongue used by those who are based in fire, ignian is almost crackerish in sound, and is even more straightforward than Lilty. The words used are spoken strongly and allow for no way to 'take back' what has been spoken easily. Ignian uses the Lilty alphabet. Celestial - Celestial is the language of the heavens. Its writings can be found in the Tower of Leires, as well as spoken among angels and other holy-aligned creatures. Celestial is a high-sounding tongue, much like Rebanese. Additionally, it lends itself extremely well to song, and thus a number of compositions are written in it.
